Ototoxic Medications

Here is the list of drugs mentioned on the 12/14/98 All About Ears radio show. As new medications are introduced all the time, be sure to look up the side effects of any new drug you are given. This should help with some of the spellings:

AMINOGLYCOSIDE ANTIBIOTICS - degeneration of inner ear hair cells

a) Platinum Compounds - cochlear metabolism toxicity
Cisplatin
Carboplatin/Paraplatin - less cochlear toxicity

c) Vincristine - rare cochlear metabolism toxicity

SALICYLATES - cochlear metabolism toxicity - reversible
Aspirin / Aspirin Containing Products

NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDS) -
cochlear metabolism toxicity - reversible
Advil, Clinoril, Feldene, Indocin, Motrin, Nalfon, Naprosyn, Nuprin, Voltaren

QUININE - cochlear metabolism toxicity

LOOP DIURETICS - degeneration of inner ear hair cells
Lasix, Edecrin, Bumex

ERYTHROMYCIN - possible effect on central nervous system pathways
EES, Eryc, E-mycin, Ilosone, Pediazole, Biaxin, Zithromax

VANCOMYCIN - etiology of ototoxicity unknown
- usually enhances aminogylcocide ototoxicity
